Step 2 - Read the handbook
This is so important! Most of your questions will be answered in this document. Taking ownership of this step will play a huge role in your success when starting out with AITKD!
Step 3 - Join Band
All of our communication runs through the BAND app.
This includes class schedules, cancellation, announcements, and school information. This is a MUST for AITKD participation. Please Select the appropriate BAND for the class you are attending!
What to expect at my first AITKD class! 🥋
We’re excited to have you join us! Here’s everything you need to know to get started:
What to Wear:
Opt for comfortable, athletic clothes that allow for movement. Avoid jeans and restrictive clothing—baggy t-shirts and athletic pants or shorts work best to keep you flexible, modest, and ready for action!
Where to Stand:
Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by someone in a black uniform who will help you out. When class begins, listen for the instructor to yell “Line Up!” stay near the back of the group, don’t worry—someone will guide you to the right spot.
Do I Need to Know Anything?
Not at all! We’ll recite some sayings together as a group (found in the handbook), and though it may seem overwhelming at first, you’re not expected to know everything right away. Just follow along, do your best, and we’ll be there to support you! Familiarizing yourself with the class rules in the handbook will also help you understand the etiquette, ensuring a smooth start.
What to Bring:
Water is important. We have fountains, but sometimes that isn’t enough! Also bring a change of clothes if you don’t want to drive home sweaty!
We can’t wait to see you in class and help you embark on your martial arts journey!
FAQ’s and Tips for Your AITKD Journey
Here are some answers to common questions and helpful tips to enhance your experience!
Q. How long does it take to become a black belt?
A. Everyone has a different journey! With dedication and consistent progress, it typically takes around 4 years if you excel at every belt and pass all tests. While it’s great to have long-term goals, focus on improving yourself in each class. Every belt offers valuable benefits!
Q. Can I get a video of the forms to practice at home?
A. Developing qualities like determination and consistency is key in martial arts. While we don’t provide videos to speed up learning, we encourage you to practice what you remember and engage deeply in each class. This intentional approach helps you grow in meaningful ways.
Q. Can I start fighting and sparring as a beginner?
A. Fighting and sparring are exciting parts of martial arts! While they carry risks, they also offer incredible learning opportunities. However, sparring is a privilege earned after a few belts. Be patient—it’ll come sooner than you think! We’ll start with fighting and sparring drills as soon as your first class.
Q. What do I need to do to rank up?
A. Consistency is key! Regular attendance in classes is crucial for your success. You can find practical steps like stripe testing and exams in your handbook and on your belt guide practice sheets.
Q. Can I compete in tournaments?
A. Absolutely! Tournaments are fun and offer great learning experiences. If you're interested, talk to an instructor who can help you prepare. AITKD has a carefully selected tournament circuit, but competing at non-school-approved tournaments is not permitted until you reach black belt.
Helpful Tips:
Tip: Ask Questions
Feel free to reach out via the Band app, but save questions for after class to avoid extra pushups during practice. Message up to two instructors at a time!
Tip: Take Notes
Jot down important points and practice reminders after each class. This will help reinforce your learning and keep you on track.
Tip: Trust the Process
It’s normal to feel frustrated at times. Remember, your instructors are here to guide you, try not to be distracted by what you think you need to be working on, we’ll help you navigate your learning journey.
Tip: Hydrate
Staying hydrated is essential! We sweat a lot, so drink plenty of water daily to support your training.
Tip: Communicate
If you have any injuries or limitations, let your instructors know. The more we understand, the better we can support your learning experience.
Tip: Mindset is Important
Martial arts are designed to help committed students grow and flourish. If personal development is your goal, you’re in the right place! Remember, there are easier hobbies out there, but AITKD is about real growth.
Tip: A black belt is just a white belt that didn’t quit. YOU CAN DO IT!
